Hace más de cincuenta años que el insigne investigador Manuel Gómez Moreno, al referirse a la historia del edificio de la catedral de Málaga, se lamentaba de que era desgraciadamente muy escasa. Hoy, aunque se ha investigado y publicado sobre su etapa barroca, seguimos en lo que a la gótica y renacentista se refiere algo más retrasados. Y es que tratar del proceso arquitectónico de una construcción compleja y secular como es el caso de esta gran catedral, no resulta nada fácil sin el firme apoyo de las fuentes. En el caso de Málaga hace siglos que los socorridos libros de fábrica correspondientes a estas épocas se perdieron. De ahí el gran vacío histórico aludido. Sólo resta, pues, la paciente labor de archivo y esta no siempre recompensa el esfuerzo derrochado. Con este trabajo, en el que recojo y comento nuevos documentos, no pretendo otra cosa que paliar un poco esta carencia, porque para colmarla hay que arrimar más hombros.
