Institució cabdal per entendre el passat medieval de Barcelona, l’estudi de Pia Almoina rep amb l’edició d’aquesta obra l’impuls decisiu que estava necessitant des de fa tant de temps. L’autor no només fa un repàs de l’estat de la qüestió, sinó que desvetlla l’origen i l’evolució del seu patrimoni, analitza els seus dominis, tant urbans com rurals, la seva gestió i els aspectes socials que l’Almoina imprimí sobre aquests; a més, forneix tot amb diversos apèndixs, un d’ells documental.

Treball sobre la història de l’Església catalana a final de l’època medieval elaborat a través de l’estudi d’una font eclesiàstica: els formularis de visites pastorals de les diverses diòcesis catalanes de la baixa edat mitjana. L’autor aconsegueix presentar les reformes de tot tipus que s’esdevingueren a la província eclesiàstica Tarraconense entre els anys 1215 i 1545, que afectaren no només al clergat secular i regular sinó també els fidels, esdevenint un element culturitzador de la societat catalana de l’època.
