Historia

En el llibre VII de la seva Història, Heròdot se centra principalment en la segona ofensiva dels perses contra Grècia, coneguda amb el nom de Segona Guerra Mèdica. Entre la derrota de Marató, descrita en el llibre anterior, i els preparatius d'aquesta segona campanya, passaran deu anys, en què l'imperi persa haurà de fer front a diverses vicissituds: la mort de Darios i l'entronització de Xerxes i les revoltes d'Egipte i Babilònia, fets igualment recollits en aquest llibre VII. Amb Xerxes al tron, doncs, els perses es disposen altre cop a envair Grècia, per la qual cosa efectuen un desplegament de forces i de recursos absolutament descomunal, que Heròdot interpreta com un altre indici de la desmesura i la prepotència d'aquest poble. Després del relat de diversos episodis d'aquesta Segona Guerra Mèdica, el llibre finalment acaba amb la descripció de la batalla de les Termòpiles i la mort heroica de Leònidas i els seus homes en defensa de la llibertat.

Mestres i Amics. Articles recull els materials de Miquel dels Sants Oliver que inicialment formaren els volums quart i cinquè de les seves Obres Catalanes, publicades poc després de la seva mort, segurament el mateix 1920, per Francesc Mateu, responsable de l'editorial Il·lustració Catalana. [...]. En conjunt, hi són reunides peces molt diverses. Abracen des de notes puntuals, que pressuposen un seguiment atent de l'activitat cultural, fins a la presentació de personatges admirats, sobretot relacionats amb la seva joventut mallorquina que, una vegada fixada la residència a Barcelona, el juliol de 1904, sempre va tractar amb nostàlgia. Això, a més dels dos estudis extensos sobre Aguiló i Maragall, als quals cal afegir "A propòsit d'Almirall", que té l'origen en els articles que el 1911 va publicar a Il·lustració Catalana. Aquests tres són treballs importants perquè, com és sabut, Almirall, Aguiló i Maragall foren els "mestres" que més l'influïren, al costat d'uns pocs més, entre els quals destaquen Jaume Balmes, Josep Maria Quadrado i Joan Sardà. Tots junts, però, conformen un llibre miscel·lani, que té l'interès de presentar molts dels temes que l'interessaren i que deixa entreveure clarament algunes de les línies mestres del seu pensament. No n'exhaureix cap, però en mostra moltes i s'hi pronuncia amb claredat. Oliver va ser molt fidel als seus plantejaments intel·lectuals i, per això, va fer ús d'unes determinades "autoritats" contemporànies, a que va acudir amb reiteració, i va repetir unes mateixes valoracions històriques que relacionà amb les seves inquietuds públiques i amb les seves posicions civils. L'alta valoració que sempre va fer de la Renaixença, la seva adscripció al regeneracionisme i al regionalisme polítics, la defensa de la llengua catalana, la denúncia de l'estructura excessivament uniformista i centralista de l'estat espanyol són constants que poden trobar en molts dels seus escrits i que aquí s'exposen amb contundència.
