Historia

El Llibre dels fets és la crónica que narra el regnat de Jaume I (Montpeller, 1208-València, 1276). Escrit en forma autobiogràfica, és un llibre únic en l'Europa del seu temps. Mai abans, cap altre rei cristià medieval no havia podruït un text així: unes memòries polítiques, en primera persona, amb voluntat d'autojustificació, relacionant fets polítics amb viències personals i inquietuds íntimes. És un text, per tant, d'un gran valor literari i documental que explica, entre altres gestes, la conquesta de Mallorca i la formació del Regne de València, tal com la van viure els protagonistes., Aquest volum, partit del Llibre dels fets, és un intent de divulgar els esdeveniments històrics més importants continguts en la crònica de Jaume I, sense perdre de vista el càracter i la personalitat del monarca.

En el año 1835, en un pueblo del norte de Francia, un joven de veinte años asesina brutalmente a su madre, su hermana y su hermano. Cuando lo detienen, casi un mes después del parricidio, varios testigos han declarado : todos concuerdan en que es un demente, porque siempre mostró un comportamiento «extraño». Sin embargo, el parricida, Pierre Rivière, tras su detención, escribe en la cárcel una Memoria, aquí reproducida, en la cual, con gran coherencia, si bien con la torpeza propia de un campesino, expone los antecedentes que lo llevaron a cometer semejante crimen y cómo, deliberadamente, lo planeó y lo llevó a cabo.Para la justicia no hay delito sin móvil y sin castigo. El móvil real, que expone Rivière en su Memoria y que induce al lector a aceptar como «lógico» su crimen, no puede, sin embargo, parecerle aceptable a la justicia, o en todo caso todo lo contundente y claro que exigen las leyes. Así pues, no tiene más remedio que construir, a partir de las declaraciones de los testigos, el móvil de la locura. Pero tampoco esa locura es clara, sobre todo tras la entrega de la Memoria al Juez. Una vez más la justicia se enfrenta con sus leyes «iguales para todos» a una de las múltiples e incesantes «excepciones» que desconciertan y desmontan el aparato legislativo. ¿Condenarlo a muerte, a cadena perpetua o internarlo en un manicomio ??Este caso, además del escándalo público, arrastró inevitablemente, dada su naturaleza ambigua de la que nadie quería responsabilizarse, la intervención de altas personalidades de su época, incluida la del Rey. No es de extrañar, pues, que Michel Foucault, uno de los grandes pensadores heterodoxos de nuestro siglo y autor de importantes estudios sobre la institución psiquiátrica y carcelaria se haya sentido, como él mismo dice en su prólogo, «subyugado por el parricida de los ojos rojizos». Realizó este trabajo colectivo de compilación, reconstitución y ordenación de todos los documentos, desde los legales hasta los periodísticos, durante un seminario en el Collège de France. Su objetivo es, además de narrar el caso del parricida Pierre Rivière en su verdadera cronología, el de revelar al lector cómo un mismo hecho, en este caso un crimen, es manipulado, tergiversado e interpretado por los distintos lenguajes que codifican la opinión pública : jurídicos, médicos, policíacos y periodísticos.En realidad, la verdad, toda la verdad y nada más que la verdad no se encuentra más que en la Memoria escrita por el propio parricida.
