El jesuïta reusenc Pere Gil i Estalella (1550-1622) fou una personalitat rellevant del seu temps: lul·lista, assessor de bisbes i institucions, confessor de virreis, defensor de les bruixes, qualificador del Sant Ofici, procurador dels processos de canonització de sant Ignasi a Barcelona, Manresa i Montserrat, tres vegades rector del col·legi de Betlem de Barcelona, rector del col·legi de Monti-sion a Palma i provincial d'Aragó de la Companyia de Jesús. Entre les seves obres destaquen la publicació d'un art de ben morir i la traducció al català del Contem[p]tus mundi. Aquest llibre ofereix l'edició del manuscrit 112 de la Biblioteca Pública Episcopal de Barcelona (BPEB), que conté la Història moral de Cathalunya de Pere Gil, el primer projecte reeixit d'història de Catalunya a l'època moderna, llibre segon d'un projecte més ampli, la Història cathalana, que inclou també una geografia del Principat, llibre primer, inèdit fins al 1949, quan Josep Iglésies l'edità; una Història ecclesiàstica de Cathalunya, llibre tercer, avui perdut, i unes Vidas dels sants de Cathalunya, llibre quart. L'edició va acompanyada d'un estudi introductori que inclou la biografia de l'autor i d'una segona part que s'ocupa de la contextualització de l'obra dins la historiografia catalana de l'època moderna en què es palesa l'ambició i l'originalitat de la Història moral de Cathalunya.
