Pertenece por derecho propio a la narrativa épica del Caribe escrita en lengua española. El relato desarrolla las peripecias de una sublevación de esclavos en Cuba. Las fábricas de azúcar y los ingenios cubanos son los escenarios de una novela que domina los datos históricos, que es a la vez crónica de una circunstancia y relato de una esencia, de una idiosincracia que imperó en la Isla de Cuba por espacio de muchos años. César Leante, ha procurado huir de la demagogia con este relato serio y contundente, donde es patente la voluntad del novelista por dejar bien claras las intenciones políticas y las fórmulas estrictamente literarias. Tal dicotomía impone también una reflexión al lector: la del orden de los factores en la composición de la novela. Historia, política, ficción y realidad son algo más que simples elementos sobre los que se ha de sostener la tramoya de la narración y, en definitiva el interés que ésta despierta en el lector. Son, además, personajes vivos que pueden fácilmente ser identificados por la complicidad del lector.
