Sovint els lectors de poesia creuen, que la producció poètica del segle XIX en llengua catalana està exclusivament vinculada a temàtiques derivades de la tríada pàtria, fides, amor, propugnada pels Jocs Florals. Però això no és absolutament cert, doncs altres temàtiques, en major o menor grau, van estar també presents. Aquesta antologia pretén mostrar que va existir també una activitat poètica inspirada per la ciència, entesa aquesta d'una manera conceptualment àmplia, on es dóna cabuda tant als aspectes teòrics com als tecnològics. Aquesta selecció presenta exemples de com el poeta vuitcentista percep la gradual i imparable industrialització del territori, conseqüència directa dels avenços científics de l'època: el que per a uns és un motor de progrés i desenvolupament, per a altres ho és de submissió al domini de les màquines o, fins i tot, de perill per al manteniment dels valors morals heretats del passat.
