Manyà i Bartomeu Xiberta van participar en un llarg procés de renovació teològica i espiritual que va començar a finals del segle XIX i que va culminar a la dècada dels seixanta del segle XX. Les diferències entre aquests quatre autors, però, són notables. Així com Maragall, fill del Romanticisme, va ser el poeta que predicava un sentiment religiós que s'allunyava de l'ortodòxia, Cardó, Manyà i Xiberta, eclesiàstics i teòlegs, van seguir l'antimodernisme, el neotomisme i la neoescolàstica.
