L’any 304, en la persecució més dura de totes les que els emperadors romans van decretar contra els cristians, va morir sant Cugat, l’home que, vingut del nord de l’Àfrica, havia portat la fe a les costes de Barcelona i el Maresme. El lloc del seu martiri va ser allà on ara s’alça el monestir de Sant Cugat del Vallès. Al mateix monestir, es van conservar també les relíquies de dues noies, anomenades Juliana i Semproniana, que segons la tradició van morir juntament amb ell. Al segle XVII, es va començar a afirmar que aquestes dues noies eren filles de Mataró, i des de llavors la ciutat no ha deixat mai d’honorar-les. Ara s’escau el dissetè centenari d’aquell martiri. I, amb aquest motiu, l’Administració de les Santes ha volgut celebrar la memòria de les dues màrtirs amb la publicació d’aquest llibret, en la línia dels altres que el Centre de Pastoral Litúrgica ha publicat en la seva col.lecció Sants i Santes.
