Se analiza aquí el ser y el obrar de la Iglesia. Comienza este cuarto tomo con un capítulo sobre la Iglesia en el Antiguo Testamento, puesto que ya se encuentra prefigurada por Israel y prosigue con un artículo referido a la Iglesia en los escritos neotestamentarios. De esta forma apreciamos la conciencia que la Iglesia ha ido desarrollando acerca de sí misma y que le ha conducido a la renovación conciliar. En el segundo volumen enfoca la eclesiología desde una perspectiva antropológica, presentando una visión dinámica de la Iglesia como verdadera comunión de personas, y tratando los sacramentos esencialmente comunitarios – Eucaristía, Matrimonio y Orden Ministerial – que solo en un marco social alcanzan un significado pleno.

Envuelto en la disputa teológica del arrianismo, Potamio, primer obispo conocido de Lisboa, ha sido objeto de una polémica sobre su permanencia en la ortodoxia católica o su adscripción a la nueva doctrina. Las noticias sobre su actuación, únicos testimonios sobre su vida, le son casi totalmente desfavorables. La ortodoxia de sus obras conservadas ha dividido la opinión de los historiadores, sosteniéndose que perteneció al bando arriano antes de regresar al catolicismo. Las obras de Potamio, el escritor hispano más antiguo en prosa, pertenecen a géneros literarios cristianos y reflejan la situación de la Iglesia en el s. IV.
