Todo comenzó cuando Charlotte Chandler fue enviada un día por la revista Playboy para entrevistar a Groucho Marx. Probablemente este libro jamás habría llegado a sus manos, lector, si Consuelo Berges no hubiera un día decidido sumergirse en los oceánicos 43 volúmenes de las Memorias del «terrible duque, que no tenía pelos en la pluma». Louis de Rouvroy, duque de Saint-Simon, es, en España, por decirlo así, un autor de Consuelo Berges, como también lo es Stendhal. Gracias a ella, leemos hoy la mayoría de sus obras magnas anotadas, prologadas y traducidas con esa compenetración que sólo consiguen aquellos que también son creadores. No es de extrañar, pues, que Consuelo Berges, buscadora infatigable y traductora igualmente de Marcel Proust, sintiera curiosidad por aquel hombre ilustre que vivió bajo el reinado de Luis XIV y de cuyas Memorias está impregnada la obra del autor de La recherche.. Porque, según afirma Berges, «la prosa de Saint-Simon es la de Proust en bruto».Saint-Simon nació en 1675. Cuando cumplió 17 años entró en una compañía de mosqueteros al servicio del Rey Sol. En 1702, tras colgar la espada, se dedicó a frecuentar una de las cortes más poderosas y brillantes de la historia de Francia. A la muerte de Luis XIV, en 1715, empezó su carrera política en el Consejo de Regencia. En 1721 es enviado por el Regente como embajador extraordinario a España con el fin de concertar la posible boda del futuro Luis XV con una hija de Felipe V. A su regreso a París un año después, la situación había cambiado, siéndole del todo desfavorable. Se retiró de la vida pública y dedicó los 32 años de vida que le quedaban a esa grandiosa obra que son las Memorias. Nadie mejor situado que ese observador meticuloso para contar lo que vio, oyó y protagonizó él mismo durante un radiante reinado de 77 años, fuente inagotable de temas de estudio para historiadores y cronistas. Y ahora de la mano de Consuelo Berges, recorremos estas páginas entresacadas de entre más de 40.000 como si recorriéramos las amplias galerías de Versalles, pobladas aún por el susurro a la vez alegre y maligno de los cotilleos y de las intrigas, y topáramos con esas damas exuberantes y desvergonzadas unas, severas e inteligentes otras, que reinaban sobre su monarca como éste reinó sobre su súbditos.
