Obra en homenaje a uno de los historiadores más notables de los estudios sobre la antigüedad de las últimas décadas en la universidad española. El libro se inicial con una breve biografía del homenajeado, titulada Julio Mangas y los estudios sobre Historia Antigua en España. Una semblanza. En estas páginas, se intenta resaltar la labor de Julio Mangas en el impulso y consolidación de los estudios sobre la historia antigua en los centros académicos españoles, a la vez que se recogen anécdotas de su vida personal, que proporcionan una imagen menos conocida del intelectual y académico; en especial, son elocuentes, y bastante entrañables, sus vivencias de la infancia y juventud que gusta recordar con inequívoca nostalgia. A la vez, a esta semblanza se añade el listado de sus publicaciones y de las tesis dirigidas. A continuación, se incluyen los textos de los colaboradores, que se han organizado por bloques temáticos, cuyos títulos reflejan precisamente las grandes líneas de investigación que interesaron al propio Julio Mangas. El recorrido se inicia con aportaciones provenientes de la arqueología, la historiografía o la epigrafía, para pasar luego al análisis de las sociedades oriental, griega, prerromana o romana; notable atención se dedica a la Historia antigua, a partir de estudios sobre la ciudad, el territorio rural, la religión o las mujeres. Los últimos capítulos se dedican a la tardoantigüedad y a la importancia del legado clásico.
