Morceau d'anthologie, la scène intiale du roman de Flaubert fait pourtant problème: "le commencement de Madame Bovary est fort mal écrit", remarquait à contrecoeur André Gide. Il est vrai: pléonasmes, allitérations grossières, discordances stylistiques et surtout ce nous primordial et inconséquent, autant d'irrégularités qui ne manquent pas de surprende sous la plume d'un écrivain dont la méticulosité reste légendaire. Le doute est donc permis: et si le commencement n'était mal écrit qu'en apparence? Entre l'erreur et le leurre, il fallait faire le choix. L'ouvrage présent se veut remémoration de cet épisode refoulé qui constitue en réalité une scène originaire d'où l'on devrait voir surgir tout le reste du roman. Quête du sens perdu, parcours au fil des pages de Madame Bovary à partir du fameux nous et de la fameuse casquette, ces deux emblèmes du récit de genèse qui ouvre le roman, travail de lecture d'un texte pluriel dont chaque nouvelle interprétation vient s'accumuler sur les précédentes, à la manière des couches de la coiffure composite de Charbovari.
