En estos poemas, como en otras obras de Joyce, el idioma se usa como medio de sátira, de destrucción por la burla; así, Gas from a Burner que literalmente quiere decir gas de un mechero, puede significar fanfarronada, dando su origen a una frese idiomática que, sin embargo, y tal vez por la poca difusión que estos poemas han tenido, no ha obtenido la aprobación popular, Joyce, conocedor hasta la médula del idioma inglés, gusta de crear nuevas frases o idiomas y de deshacer otras, ya establecidas, creando la confusión en el lector y la ambivalencia de sentido que todas las frases hechas poseen, exigiendo de aquél un análisis lógico del significado último de las mismas; de aquí que traducir a Joyce sea muy difícil o muy fácil, motivo principal por el cual se ha optado por hacer la edición bilingúe de sus poemas, para que el lector pueda juzgar por sí mismo.
