La mirada de Aquiles es un libro que recoge, describe y analiza el gran acorde que representa la poética de Robert Lowell en la coyuntura de la literatura norteamericana contemporánea. Así concentramos nuestra mirada sobre la secuencia poética de Life Studies (1959), que interpretamos como epicentro irradiador del sistema imaginario de este poeta. Una secuencia que también supuso un punto de inflexión en la vida pública desde una yoidad que impulsó su universo íntimo y profundamente elegíaco hacia el exterior. Desde aquí se procede a profundizar en For the Union Dead (1964), para reflexionar sobre lo que denominamos como conflictividad axiológica estructural inherente al sistema imaginario de Lowell. Desde esta perspectiva se parte de la edición norteamericana que incluye ambas secuencias poéticas y que contiene la importante sección en prosa titulada ?91 Revere Street?. La profundización en estas dos secuencias líricas implica la revisión previa de un mapa de relecturas que afecta no sólo a la obra anterior de Lowell sino a toda la modulación de su sistema imaginario desde su temprana etapa creativa. Es un camino hacia y desde el mito buscando llenar el vacío de las crisis religiosas tanto del propio Lowell como del pensamiento occidental, tal como indica George Steiner. El poeta accede a Aquiles como referente. Así, desde la asimilación del mito construye su cosmovisión a partir de la palabra poética.THE RHETORIC OF RACE
The Rhetoric of Race: Toward a Revolutionary Construction of Black Identity analiza el legado de los principales estudiosos de la identidad afroamericana: W. E. B. Du Bois, Alain Locke y Amiri Baraka. El propósito de este volumen es investigar y criticar sus ideas para mostrar hasta qué punto sus esfuerzos a la hora de crear una definición de la identidad negra no fueron todo lo fructíferos que cabría esperar. El libro intenta elaborar una definición revolucionaria de la identidad negra enmarcada dentro de las siguientes posiciones teóricas: la exigencia del reconocimiento de un pasado de sufrimiento, la réplica de lo negativo respecto al afroamericano y la llamada-respuesta, como forma de comunicación negra. Utilizando la retórica como punto de partida, esta construcción se intenta justificar desde las posiciones filosóficas defendidas por Michel Foucault y Gilles Deleuze. Las ideas de Foucault sirven de base para analizar las posibilidades que encierra esta identidad negra de resistencia ante el poder, mientras que las de Deleuze son útiles a la hora de investigar el repliegue hacia sí misma que esta identidad realiza para crear un espacio interno. A pesar de formar parte de lo externo, este espacio interno se convierte en punto de encuentro de todos los aspectos históricos de esta identidad al hablar de lo que ha sido, es y será. Por otra parte, se argumenta que este encuentro interno con sus múltiples partes lleva a esta identidad a proyectar un yo positivo cuando se ha de enfrentar a lo externo. El análisis de las ideas de investigadoras afroamericanas como Barbara Smith y bell hooks sirve de cierre. El capítulo 5 expone las conclusiones a las que llega este estudio. En ellas se analiza la importancia de la música hip-hop dentro del mundo contemporáneo para la comunidad afroamericana. Por su fuerza cultural y lingüística, el hip-hop posee el potencial necesario para construir una idea positiva de lo que es ser negro en los Estados Unidos para la juventud afroamericana actual.VIRGIL’S NEID

El nombre de Hemingway era conocido entre los oficiales franquistas varios años antes de que su ficción estuviera al alcance de los lectores españoles. Para Franco, Hemingway, que había participado en el bando republicano durante la guerra civil, era un propagandista rojo y su novela (Por quién doblan las campanas), uno de los elementos que más contribuían a la tergiversación en el extranjero de los hechos históricos de la contienda. Este volumen saca a la luz los documentos oficiales sobre el norteamericano depositados en el Archivo General de la Administración de Alcalá de Henares, que fueron compilados por los burócratas gubernamentales franquistas; estudia los expedientes de los censores sobre los libros del escritor y reproduce los pasajes que éstos tacharon de las ediciones españolas de dichas obras.
