El present volum agrupa nou peces de les modalitats escèniques amb què Joan Brossa construïa l'altre peu del teatre català. D'aquestes nou, només dues se cenyeixen a una sola especialitat (titelles): les altres set combinen aleatòriament circ, music-hall, il·lusionisme, dansa, fregolisme, commedia dell'arte, ombres xineses... Brossa hi traspassa i retraspassa constantment les fronteres entre les arts i els gèneres, una opció de dramatúrgia plural que va defensar amb coherència i fermesa en tota la poesia escènica, des del primer guió (El cop desert, 1944, publicat ara per primer cop) fins a l'últim que li coneixem (Poemància, 1996). Al llarg de tots aquests anys va mantenir la primigènia intencionalitat dramàtica i va concebre lescena com a espai metafòric de la vida. El 1944 va escriure El gran Fracaroli demanant al protagonista un conjunt d'habilitats que només hauria pogut acomplir Leopoldo Fregoli. L'obra encara no s'ha dut mai a escena, però quan, molts anys més tard, Brossa va conèixer el transformista Arturo Brachetti, va comprendre que no shavia equivocat. Com tampoc no es va equivocar escrivint per a Jesús Julve Hausson les tres peces publicades en aquest volum: «el màgic més complet dels Països Catalans» i el més prolix dels nostres dramaturgs han fressat camins per a l'il·lusionisme contemporani. Circ i pallassos adopten dimensions noves i insospitades en la poesia escènica brossiana. El poeta sintonitzava amb el circ en allò essencial: la veritat nua i poderosa d'un espectacle «sense perruca». La seva connexió emotiva i conceptual amb les arts de la pista és d'una lògica inqüestionable i d'uns resultats tothora sorprenents.
