Dunn acaba d'arribar a una casa, dirigida per l'entusiasta capità Shotover com si es tractés d'un vaixell, on gairebé tothom es fa aquesta mateixa pregunta: les filles del capità, incapaces de gestionar la fascinació que exerceixen envers els homes, o Hector, un seductor cansat de la seva pròpia vulgaritat. Tancats en aquella casa, trobaran respostes a les seves inquietuds.Estrenada l'any 1921 al Royal Court de Londres, La casa dels cors trencats és considerada la millor peça teatral de Bernard Shaw, juntament amb Santa Joana i l'aclamada Pygmalion, i la seva obramés profunda i ambiciosa.
