El Estado de Weimar evoca una experiencia traumática: la República, que había nacido de la derrota, vivió en la confusión y murió en el desastre.¿Por qué protagoniza Alemania semejante transformación mientras otros países consiguen preservar el contenido de la democracia?. 'El fracaso de una ilusión' plantea los diversos componentes que concurren en la fallida factura de la República como institución y como cultura: la ambigüedad del proyecto inicial y la prematura autoexclusión de los partidarios de ideologías antidemocráticas (autoritarias y comunistas); la adversa situación económica, marcada por el precio de la derrota en la guerra, el coste de la paz y su discriminado reparto social; la precaria socialización republicana, lo mismo en la escuela y en la fábrica que en las actividades de ocio y entretenimiento (deporte, lectura, teatro, música, radio y cine), etc.Diezmada de apoyos ideológicos y políticos, culturales y sociales, la República de Weimar se sume en el desconcierto y apenas logra contrarrestar los efectos de la crisis económica y social de los años treinta. Con la depresión se desvanece la escasa confianza en el lenguaje de la democracia parlamentaria y se acentúa la crispación social y política. Enero de 1933 es un punto y seguido en la búsqueda de soluciones.
