El jove Norman Huntley, fill del llibreter de Cornford, i el seu amic Henry, mecànic de cotxes, han passat a Irlanda uns dies de vacances fabulosos. De tornada cap a Anglaterra decideixen entrar a visitar una església custodiada per un sagristà que té molt poques ganes de rebre forasters. Per guanyar-se la seva simpatia, els dos nois s’inventen que coneixen una gran amiga del bisbe: l’octogenària senyoreta Hargreaves, arpista i poeta, i també una viatgera intrèpida que va a tot arreu amb un gos i una cacatua... I resulta que funciona, perquè els sagristà els obre la porta. De fet, funciona tan bé que al cap d’uns dies en Norman rep una carta de la senyoreta Hargreaves dient que està feliç de fer-li saber que passarà uns dies a Cornford i que confia que la vindrà a recollir a l’estació.
