UNA REPÚBLICA POÉTICA (BURTON, ROBERT)
Una república poética es el sueño utópico de Robert Burton, el desmedido autor de Anatomía de la melancolía, maestro de la prosa barroca inglesa y uno de los raros por excelencia de la literatura europea. Robert Burton (Lindley, 1577-Oxford, 1640), escritor ingles, fue vicario de la iglesia de Santo Tomás de Oxford y profesor de la Universidad de Oxford. Con el seudónimo de Democritus Junior publicó un notable tratado, La anatomía de la melancolía (1621), un largo ensayo médico, filosófico e histórico, sin precedentes en la literatura, en el que se recoge de manera enciclopédica todo el conocimiento que hasta el momento se tenía sobre la dolencia depresiva, sus síntomas y su cura, desde los autores clásicos hasta los modernos. Burton reescribió una y otra vez la obra a lo largo de su vida y en el prólogo reconoce haberlo hecho en gran parte como terapia contra su propia depresión. La obra es tenida hoy por uno de los mayores monumentos de la época barroca, además de ser una genial síntesis de la cultura europea que compendia gran número de textos clásicos. La reflexión acerca de la utopía y la distopía -su evolución histórica, sus declinaciones contemporáneas y potencialidad futura- excede los ámbitos historiográficos o académicos. Constituye un esfuerzo esencial de recuperación de un elenco de materiales conceptuales cruciales para realizar un diagnóstico del presente.
