FRANCESC MORAGAS I LA CAIXA DE PENSIONS (1868-1935) (PÉREZ BASTARDAS, ALFRED)

Francesc Moragas i Barret (1868-1935) va ser un advocat expert en assegurances i previsió social, membre de la Lliga Regionalista, que va aconseguir interessar un nucli de la burgesia catalana per crear una Caixa de Pensions per a la Vellesa i d?Estalvis, que fos una eina d?harmonització social mitjançant l?hàbit de la previsió social. Nascuda arran de les vagues obreres de 1901 i 1902, la Caixa va introduir-se ràpidament entre la societat catalana gràcies a una estratègia d?expansió de les seves activitats per pobles i ciutats, i una dinàmica obra benèfica, social i cultural. Moragas va ser un home d?una gran consciència social, auster, excel?lent gestor, amb visió de futur i, sobretot, molt innovador. Es va avançar al seu temps a l?hora d?establir les bases de les assegurances socials modernes, que més tard donarien lloc a l?Institut Nacional de Previsió i, indirectament, a l?anomenat estat del benestar. Va dirigir la Caixa de Pensions i la seva Obra Social amb idèntics objectius d?equitat i eficàcia, posant l`èmfasi tant en la necessària fortalesa dels balanços financers com en la importància de repercutir els beneficis per contribuir a crear una societat millor.

En 1910, la opinión pública española fue conmovida por una serie de acontecimientos que tenían como protagonista a un profesor prácticamente desconocido en los círculos intelectuales de la época. Enviado a América por su universidad con el propósito de trabar acuerdos regulares de intercambio con las casas de altos estudios argentinas, uruguayas, chilenas, mexicanas y cubanas, su éxito rebasaría la esfera académica para impactar en la sociedad civil y el mundo político. En efecto, Altamira no sólo dictaría cátedra y obtendría doctorados honoris causa, sino que pronunciaría decenas de conferencias en sociedades obreras y de educación popular, sería recibido por ministros y jefes de Estado y tendría presencia cotidiana en la prensa.

In June of 1968, a frightened Cuban refugee unable to speak English, stood at the doorsteps of Maryville Academy, an orphanage in Chicago. FROM THE AUTHOR: As the doors closed behind me, I entered my new home, Collins Hall. It was there that I learned English and the values of life. I slowly and proudly became an American. The values and lessons I learned at Maryville, will stay with me forever. Thirty years later in 1998, I again would become an immigrant this time in Sweden for a second time, learning a new language and culture. The daily struggle of Swedish discrimination against foreigners was extremely evident. My anger and frustration grew with each passing day, unable to find work or simulate into the Swedish society. I dreamt of one day returning home to America. My motivation to succeed in Sweden never wavered. Slip into my shoes as, The Maryville Kid and walk through these pages experiencing my triumphs and tragedies in Cuba, America, and Sweden.
