Una buena defensa de algo es su estudio crítico y este libro pretende analizar el razonamiento ordinario, el básicamente no-deductivo de la gente, que es una manifestación del fenómeno natural «pensar». Se parte de los dos grandes problemas del significado y de su medida, y de la clasificación en conjeturas y refutaciones de las conclusiones del razonamiento ordinario. Así, el razonamiento consiste en la refutación, la deducción, la abducción y la inducción, diferenciando entre la deducción formal lógica y la más débil o informal. Se muestra que el significado no es único, si no que depende del contexto y del propósito del uso a cada caso. Finalmente, se tratan cuestiones interesantes para las aplicaciones: los antónimos y los sinónimos, la incertidumbre no aleatoria, la analogía, así como aspectos filosóficos relativos a la verdad o a los principios de no-contradicción.

Schiller pertenece a nuestro imaginario colectivo, al recrear mitos y leyendas que nos son muy próximos. Aparte de esa familiaridad, remueve estratos profundos de nuestra identidad europea y de nuestra civilización occidental. Estamos ante un autor que rompió las costuras de todos los géneros literarios y logró zafarse del férreo marcaje de las disciplinas angostas y de los patriotismos obtusos. Desde su cátedra de la Universidad de Jena, exhortó a sus alumnos a transgredir los límites impuestos por la especialización y la profesionalización del saber, a saltarse las barreras que levantan el academicismo y la reducción del conocimiento a un mero valor de cambio.

Esta investigación sobre Bergson que se inicia al arrullo del Guadalquivir y discurre después mirando al océano, quiere ser una contribución al conocimiento del filósofo de la vida y de lo concreto. Para ello la autora, a través de las sinuosidades de un pensamiento que busca ante todo sugerir, rastra la filosofía bergsoniana de la inteligencia ?el aspecto menos estudiado-, con el propósito de esclarecer el ?prejuicio intelectualista? de filósofo y a la vez subrayar la aportación que desde esta perspectiva Bergson hace al pensamiento del siglo XX.
