Poetry can be written in many forms. One of the popular forms is called haiku. It is a challenging yet rewarding art. The key is to make you point quickly and completely while confined to 3 lines and strict syllable counts: First line: 5 syllables Second line: 7 syllables Third line: 5 syllables Writing these require an open mind, a good eraser and great themes. You can create a powerful, impactful, thought provoking poem in three lines. You can ignite a flame of love with 3 words. If you are looking for some powerful haiku start right here. ***Some poems have strong subject matter, advised for 18 years old or over. LYRICS AND LINES FROM ANOTHER LIFE
For most of my life, I've been a writer and very often the words I write take the form of lyrics rather than poetry, a throw-back to my days in bands. This book contains many of those older lyrics as well as newer poetic ramblings and even some prose thrown in for good measure. I hope you enjoy them all. Some photos appear throughout and they were each taken by myself.EL LIBRO BLANCO
THE HISTORY OF TREE ROOTS
Although these poems are informed by a lifetime of living in the Ozarks, readers will not find the over-wrought sentimentality, tired stereotypes, or visions of an indestructible, primeval wilderness that have too often colored writing set in this region. Instead, these poems recognize the attributes and faults of the past and present, challenge the clichéd representations of place, and engage the experiences of small and independent farmers—a group largely ignored in depictions of the region. These poems also move beyond the Ozarks by addressing a number of universal concerns, such as urban sprawl, the devaluation of manual labor, a diminished sense of place, the loss of small communities, and the fragility of the natural environment.BYE BYE BLACKBIRD
The poetry of Eileen Berry distills recollection into its essence, and this present collection reminds us once again of how good she is at this. As she plunges into deepest memory, her images are so powerful, we are helpless not to go with her. We are in the house at Marshside, "always cold especially in summer when no fires were lit, and the air felt thin;" we are there in the dry, overheated desert; we are at the funeral when there was "a silence . . . more full than sound." Eileen Berry provides for us a time and place that we did not know but through her unerring pitch and exquisite language, we feel is now ours. Stella Suberman, author of two memoirs published by Algonquin Books, The Jew Store and When It Was Our War This is a wonderfully peculiar collection of poems. It takes the reader back to a set of scenes on a particular English sea marsh in years gone by. And then, the same evocative vocabulary and turn of phrase takes the reader to a suk in the northern Sudan. How these poems, these collective narratives of stories so personal, hold together is marvelous and only possible because they come from the voice of a singular author - Eileen Berry. In these poems of a life well lived, Stephanie Kaplan Cohen shares feelings and observations most people choose to deny. She gracefully gives her reader permission to feel and become as authentic as these poems. This book of laughter, tears and wry insights is the work of a wise, wonderful and insightful poet in her prime. Linda Leedy Schneider Author of Through My Window: Poetry of a Psychotherapist What a pleasure it is to read Stephanie Kaplan Cohen's poetry. It has wit, poignancy, and remarkable craft. I look forward to reading more of this gifted poet's work. Louise Albert Author of But I'm Ready to Go, and Less Than Perfect I dare you to read Additions and Subtractions without falling in love with the poet - with her honesty, quirkiness, originality and humor. Of course, I was already in love with Stephanie Kaplan Cohen. Great truths come in small packages. Brenda Mantz Author of Pungo Creek, and Lilly's TattooTHE ART OF FOLDING
In these two major suites of poems, Sarah Zale has composed an epic, an eye-opening, heartrending book that should be read and read again. Hers is a singular and gently courageous voice, one from which we may all draw sustenance and wisdom. Sam Hamill Sarah Zale's first book, The Art of Folding, is worthy of significant notice: her poetic sequence examines our personal responsibilities in a time of war and our relationship to atrocity. She softens the hard line of inquiry with compassionate listening and attentive observation. H.K. Hummel Sarah Zale's The Art of Folding is a masterful work of sustained and interwoven lyrics, at once political and intimate, in which the gestures of daily life are seen as if for the first time in the light of history: folding and unfolding ordinary laundry and something more-cranes, folded and real, wounds, visible and invisible. What we have here is sheer lyric utterance: history and memory, personal disclosure, in a language at once compelling and transparent. These poems are haunted by Nuremberg, Spencer Tracy and Marlene Dietrich, the Wizard of Oz, Camelot, Jerusalem, and there is also Palestine. This poet writes back to Jabès, Siamanto, Amichai and Darwish, and calls forth a most ancient and moral imperative: that poets write of their time, and of the call to the best of humanity. That she struggles toward the boundary between Israel and Palestine is a mark of her seriousness. That she achieves this is a mark of her power. Carolyn Forché Sarah Zale has written a book of hauntingly straightforward and stark, yet inviting poems. Her unique voice and music will captivate you, her images draw you in from the beginning (shirt, ironing, hair), as this important and necessary book gains momentum with each poem. Martha SilanoTHE SPOKEN BODY
This Brown Girl, Dr. Yolanda Nieves, sings of Spirit in these poetic pieces. She sings of a life of dichotomies - a life froth with painful memories that lie dormant, ready to erupt at any given moment in any number of ways. These memories wrestle with harmonies of Hope and Faith that actively convey a melody of Truth - that we are all God's children "woven together like the roots of a baobab tree netted into the earth" - free to grow, free to expand life, free to give to the world who we truly are. Sarah E. Howard, Ed.D., L.P.C. In her second collection of poetry, Yolanda Nieves takes us on a musical, rhythmic, spoken-word ride reaffirming her talent as a poet of the new millennium. Her carefully crafted pieces give voice to neighborhood boys, ex-lovers, and varicose veins with lyrical words that sing rather than speak, illustrating both the simplicity and complexity of life. A superb follow-up to Dove Over Clouds. Xenia Ruizm, Author of Choose Me and Boricua Morena: Memoirs of a Humboldt Park Girl AT WORK IN THE BRIDAL INDUSTRY
Nadell Fishman takes the subjects of ordinary women’s lives and not only delves beneath them but sets them slightly askew so that we see them from fresh new angles. In this world, for instance, “Dorothy decided that Oz suits her,” and these poems will certainly suit its readers. —Linda Pastan Nadell Fishman is able to take on both sides of emotion—love and loss—with equal intensity. The graceful hopes that we bring to our engagements with one another are played out in her poems with compassion, clarity and insight. There is no melodrama in these poems; no special pleading. They go about their work with an attentiveness that is now rueful and now struck by the delight of a woman who “encounters love” amid “her vestige of sadness.” Her poise is all the more poignant for the tremor of feeling that she sounds in poem after poem. —Baron Wormser Nadell Fishman’s beautifully wrought poems are notable for their voice—at once wry, passionate and reflective--and the accumulated wisdom of a life rich in love and loss. At Work in the Bridal Industry is as ample as a novel and as intimate as a memoir, but above all it is poetry of the most pleasurable kind. —Lynne Sharon Schwartz A BANNER YEAR.
Iris Appelquist presents her fourth book of poems, a banner year. This is a small and incisive selection of new works which assay the experience of a modern woman through the lenses of mother and daughterhood. The poems are wry, ascerbic and full of the signature existentialist humor of the author.
